Looney Tunes - Back
in Action DVD
Great ode to Looney
Tunes Superstars
..... the true stars of
this movie are the Looney Tunes characters themselves.....
Bugs, Daffy, and their friends are given stellar treatment
by director Joe Dante (Gremlins) and animation director
Eric Goldberg (Aladdin), both longtime Looney
afficionadoes, and it shows. Even Gremlins veteran
composer Jerry Goldsmith is along for the ride, and cannot
resist a quick musical cue to the little green monsters
when a rusty Gremlin auto appears onscreen. All sorts of
such in-jokes make for delightful viewing. Among numerous
cameos, look out for Joe Dante's "mentor" Roger
Corman, who appears briefly as a frustrated Batman
director. Brendan Fraser (at home costarring as/with toons
like Dudley Do-Wright, George of the Jungle, and
MonkeyBone) provides an enjoyable performance as a wannabe
stuntman, working as a security guard on the Warners
Studio lot. He is followed by freshly-fired Daffy Duck,
who gets barely better screen treatment than usual, via a
subplot of the ongoing Bugs-Daffy rivalry (sorry,
but I ALWAYS liked Daffy better).
... I was fully satisfied with the widescreen DVD release,
and the extras are worthy viewing. One nice feature
is an original roadrunner cartoon, surprisingly well-done
for a modern effort... |
